Early transport within Hamilton was hampered by the numerous gullies and streams which flowed into the Waikato River and by the river itself. This collection includes photographs of the Union bridge, the bridge that physically united East and West Hamilton; the iconic Fairfield bridge; Cobham bridge; the construction of the low level railway bridge and the conversion of the old railway bridge to the current Claudelands Road traffic bridge. The first bridge in Hamilton did not cross the Waikato River. The No. 1 Bridge crossed Waitawhiriwhiri Stream and connected Hamilton Borough with Beerescourt.
