About this collection

The photographs in this collection record a decade of world class retail display work under the management and inspiration of John Millar. The window displays were photographed at night with screens arranged on the street to cut reflection from lights from cars, street lights and shop lighting across the street.

John Millar was born in Hamilton living his early years in Claude Street. He attended Hamilton East School and Hamilton Technical College where he studied commercial art. He joined the display staff at H & J Courts Ltd in 1945 becoming display manager in 1962. Millar and Courts won numerous awards and featured in both the New York Times and the German trade magazine ‘Das Schaufenster’, the widely acknowledged bible of retail display art.

H & J Court Ltd, established in 1939, was a department store in Victoria Street, Hamilton.
